At Aston Manor, we know that while the years may pass, our most cherished memories never truly leave us. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce the launch of “The Reminiscence Express” – a first-of-its-kind immersive experience designed to transport our residents (and our local Aylesbury neighbours!) back to their most beloved destination

Have you ever wished you could step back in time to a favourite holiday or a life-changing journey? Whilst, sadly, we can’t go there physically, what we can do is recreate the essence of our experience by sharing our memories and using sensory aids.

And our residents are doing exactly that through reminiscence therapy – without even needing to leave the comfort of our home on De Havilland Way.

A first-class ticket to the past

The heart of this project is our purpose-built, vintage-style train carriage. Designed to evoke the golden age of rail travel, the carriage features digital screens that display shifting landscapes, creating the magic of motion.

But this isn’t just about the view. “The Reminiscence Express” is a form of sensory reminiscence therapy. By combining the sights and sounds of travel with regionally themed cuisines prepared by our talented chefs, we are helping residents unlock memory pathways and boost mental agility by sharing the stories that shaped their lives.

The inaugural journey: From Southport to the Philippines

We recently celebrated our official “departure” with two of our wonderful residents, Vic and Sheila.

As the virtual landscape rolled by, Vic took us across the globe to the Philippines, sharing fascinating tales from his time there with the Queen’s Scouts. And to help bring those memories to life, our kitchen team prepared Escabeche, a traditional Filipino sweet and sour fish dish.

Meanwhile, Sheila took a trip closer to home, reminiscing about the crisp sea air of Southport. She enjoyed a classic British seaside meal in the form of fish and chips, proving that the taste of home is often the strongest link to our happiest years.

An invitation to the Aylesbury Community. Join us!

“The Reminiscence Express” isn’t just for our residents – it’s for our community. We want Aston Manor to be a hub of connection, and we are looking for “guest passengers” to join us on our future journeys.

Do you have an incredible travel story to share? Are you a local resident with a history of adventure?

We are inviting members of the Aylesbury community to book a seat in our carriage. You’ll have the chance to e

xchange stories with our residents, enjoy delicious, themed food and help us foster meaningful intergenerational connections.

As our Home Manager, Rex Pudol, puts it: “While there’s a lovely, profound sense of nostalgia to the experience, it is also about using specific textures and sounds to unlock memory pathways. We want to invite our local community to join us on our virtual travels – if you have an engaging story to share, we’d love to hear from you.”

How to get involved

Whether you’re a world traveller or simply someone who loves a good chat and a nostalgic trip down memory lane, we would love to welcome you aboard.
